In 1918, the Design Bureau of the Construction Office conducted a series of studies that resulted in several dozen pre-draft designs of high-speed battleships. They were based on the project of battlecruiser Ersatz Yorck and differed in displacement and armament composition. One of the projects was a ship with three main battery turrets, a displacement of 45,000 tons, and a speed of 31 knots.
